James Fergusson (1808â€"86) became one of the most respected architectural historians of his generation. This 1880 collaboration with the young archaeologist James Burgess (1832â€"1916) is the culmination of his pioneering studies of India's cave temples. It remains of relevance to students of Indian architecture and history.
