An honorary professor of Sanskrit at Calcutta's Fort William College, Henry Thomas Colebrooke (1765â€"1837) became Britain's foremost orientalist during the early nineteenth century. Published in 1801, this three-volume compilation and translation of Brahman law was based on the unfinished work of the scholar Sir William Jones (1747â€"94).
