Saint Augustine's classic work has endured sixteen centuries of study and scrutiny--any intent to abridge such a text might seem the height of hubris. However, the hope is that a shorter, more manageable edition will invite the reader to later engagement with the full text. This edition draws entirely on William Babcock's 2012 superb translation.
