I honestly don’t even know where to start with this book!! Out of all the ones I’ve read in this series, this was by far the one that touched me the most. Following Joey’s life was absolutely devastating. I cried so much, and so many times I just wanted to reach into the book, hold him, and take care of him. The author managed to bring such heavy topics into this story—addiction, teenage pregnancy, the repetition of family patterns, lack of love at home, depression…—without ever making it feel boring or cliché. Instead, she makes us truly feel and understand why these things happen. Every time I pick up one of her books, I know I need to prepare myself mentally, and yet I’m never prepared for the emotional rollercoaster she takes me on.
