This study offers a new view of South Korea’s transformation since 1960. Focusing on three turning pointsâ€"the creation of the development state in the 1960s, democratization in 1987, and the 1997 economic crisisâ€"Jongryn Mo and Barry R. Weingast show how Korea sustained growth by resolving crises in favor of greater political and economic openness.
