Taking a look at the development of photonic technology from the macro to the microscale, this work reviews the principles and technologies underlying the field. It introduces the photonic node and then discusses each subsystem, including transmitters, couplers and switches, multiplexers and demultiplexers, receivers, amplifiers and compensators.
