Gertrude Jekyll (1843â€"1932) was one of the most influential garden designers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In her first book, published in 1899, she sets out her philosophy of gardening as a combination of nature and art: 'planting ground is painting a landscape with living things'.
