An influential and prolific Victorian author, Margaret Oliphant (1828â€"97) wrote novels, short stories, biographies and a series of cultural histories of European cities through biographical sketches, of which this is the last. Originally published in 1895, it paints a vivid picture of the development of Rome from the fourth century to the Renaissance.
