William West (1770â€"1854) was a bookseller who wrote extensively about his experiences in the book trade. He published this charming and evocative compendium of alehouse trivia and stories anonymously in 1825. This edition, published in 1875, is an expanded version, edited and annotated by popular writer Charles Hindley.
