The experiences of Dr Jim Rickett, a GP near Portsmouth, in the Blitz of 1940 provide a cameo picture of that time. Later he served as a specialist surgeon in setting up a hospital for the commandos on the Adriatic island of Vis. Deprived of the basics and inundated with work he survived as best he could.
