The Milky Way provides crucial clues about how galaxies form, through kinematic data, ages, and chemical compositions of millions of resolved stars. In IAU S395, astronomers discuss stellar populations, surveys and instrumentation. To place our galaxy in context, cosmological simulations, external galaxies and future instruments are also presented.
