When Eli Whitney turned 13, a special special education teacher taught him to use facilitated communication to spell words. Eli, born mute and with little control of his muscles, relays thoughtful poems about family, politics, and life as an autistic adult. Eli lives in San Rafael, near Napa and his transcriber mother, poet Louise Grassi Whitney.
