Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724â€"1804) published a series of works recording his observations on the picturesque across British landscapes. This two-volume work of 1789 describes a journey made principally through Scotland in 1776, taking in Edinburgh and the lochs, castles and rivers of the Highlands.
