During the Second World War Maggie's abusive husband, Sam signs up while drunk and is sent to battle. The terrifying bombings at home persuade Maggie to evacuate her twins to North Wales, where they are separated. While Maggie, her younger daughter and her mother struggle to survive the German bombing, her children face danger of a different kind.
