This text is the memoir of Dr Albert Skarvan, a Slovak by birth and national consciousness and a citizen of the Habsburg monarchy, who derived his pacifist ideas from Tolstoy's works. After having refused to serve his term as a soldier, he was tried and sentenced to imprisonment.
