The achievement of James Mill (1773â€"1836), political philosopher, economist and historian has largely been overshadowed by that of his son, John Stuart Mill, but Alexander Bain's 1882 biography shows that Mill made significant contributions to philosophy (especially utilitarianism), history and political reform.
