The Royal Astronomical Society, the oldest such organisation in the world, was founded in 1820. Following its centenary, this historical survey appeared in 1923. Comprising chapters contributed by leading astronomers of the early twentieth century, the work is particularly valuable for its inclusion of extracts from primary sources.
