Traces sentimentality in 19th-century imaginative literature by focusing on six major writers: Tennyson and Dickens as the giants of Victorian domestic sentimentality; Hopkins and Hardy as transitional figures; and Lawrence and Eliot as representatives, in different ways, of that era.
