Naturalist and surgeon Sir John Richardson (1787â€"1865) accompanied Sir John Franklin on his first two Arctic expeditions. Richardson collected specimens during the trips and produced this four-volume natural history work on his return. Volume 1 was first published in 1829 and is dedicated to Arctic mammal species.
