Aims to demonstrate that books matter most on a personal level and that reading offers a great deal more to the reader than a mere escape into fantasy. Using the modern novel as a starting point, the author draws upon Ben Jonson, Bunyan, Byron, Wordsworth and Eliot to develop his thesis.
