Sir Leslie Stephen (1832â€"1904), the founding Editor of the Dictionary of National Biography and a writer on philosophy, ethics, and literature, wrote these closely argued essays challenging the validity of religious doctrine originally for Fraser's Magazine and The Fortnightly Review. They were first published in book form in 1873.
