Counter-hagiography and counter-biography besmirch foundational figures held dear by different religious, political, or social groups. The reputation of the great Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) thinker Moses Mendelssohn was damaged among the Orthodox by how Haskalah extremists portrayed him in their image.
