This compilation of anecdotes, aphorisms and biographical details about his friend Alexander Pope, the most famous poet of his age, was made by Joseph Spence (1699â€"1768). The manuscript, to which a life of Spence has been added, was not published until 1820, nearly fifty years after his death.
