Laura is born to a wealthy family, and lives on a vast Northumberland estate - until her father gambles everything away on the billiard table. Many years later, Laura moves to London and begins an affair with a much older, well- known artist. But she also becomes dependent on alcohol and then heroin, with devastating consequences.
