The naval officer Frederick William Beechey (1796â€"1856) served under John Franklin during the 1818 British expedition to the Arctic. The two ships, Dorothea and Trent, were caught in ice and failed to find a route beyond Spitsbergen. This work, published in 1843, remains the principal account of the expedition.
