This is a study of the common social characteristics and circumstances of those among the lay society of twelfth-century England who tended to seek assistance in the form of miracles at the shrines of saints. It aims to make sense of their religious experience and motivation, re-evaluating the religious clichés of devotion found in conventional medieval narratives.
