Relying in part on the work of Hans Georg Gadamer, Dallmayr seeks to clarify the meaning of "civilization", to concretize that meaning through the hermeneutics of Western civilization and to delineate the significance of dialogue carried on in the context of the nascent global city or cosmopolis.
