Starting from an analysis of The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, this book explores two underexamined aspects of Umberto Eco’s work: first, the representation of Italian Fascism and its influence on national identity; second, subjectivity and individual identity, which Eco addressed only in a fragmented way in his theoretical writings.
