An influential and prolific Victorian author, Margaret Oliphant (1828â€"97) wrote novels, short stories, biographies and a series of cultural histories of European cities through biographical sketches, of which this is the second. Originally published in 1887, it paints a vivid picture of the development of Venice during the middle ages and Renaissance.
