Anodized aluminium test pieces sealed by immersion in boiling water and with nickel salts (cold sealing), with different thickness classes (10 ìm and 20 ìm), were exposed to marine and industrial atmospheres in order to evaluate the influence of the sealing process and quality on its atmospheric corrosion resistance. The characterization of the anodic coating was done previously to the exposure by a set of standard quality control tests (thickness measurement and sealing quality by phosphoric/chromic acid immersion) and by acetic salt spray (ASS) corrosion test for corrosion resistance evaluation. After nine years of exposure, only the test pieces exposed in the industrial environment exhibited corrosion. The results obtained for this site showed that the cold sealed coatings, specially the ones with thickness class 20 ìm, were less corrosion resistant than the high temperature sealed coatings. Some of them showed extensive pitting only after three months of exposure. Also in the ASS corrosion test, these less corrosion resistant test pieces had also shown premature failure. This behaviour was a bit different from what was expected considering only the standard sealing quality test done. SEM observations made on the surface of some of these test pieces revealed intensive cracking of the coating that could justify their worst corrosion behaviour.
Additionally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests were done on unexposed samples and on test pieces subjected to the several corrosive environments, to further understanding of the corrosion behaviour observed.
